Pilipinas Got Talent Worlwide Trending in Twitter

I was watching Pilipinas Got Talent when I noticed that it was trending in Twitter. Please support Jeline Olivia as the first grand champion of the talent show. But as what I've noticed in Twitter and other social networking sites, it seems that Jovit Baldivino is already a sure winner. I am proud to be a Pinoy!

Twitter: Frequent 'Over Capacity' Issue

As we all know, Twitter is one of the fastest growing social networking site. And now that their number of users are tweeting more than a million of messages per second, the server cannot anymore handle the traffic. What makes Twitter better than the other websites is that the '140 character' status update is really simple to use. I hope it'll be resolved soon. God Bless you!

How is It to Become a Teenager Part 3: Sex, Violence and Independence

I googled the keywords “teenager” and “adolescences” in case there are some articles that would help me compose the 3rd franchise of my article but I didn’t get that much information. What I noticed was that the number one search in Google.ph is related to sex and pornography.

Doctor Jose Protacio Rizal, the Philippine National Hero, is often quoted because of his saying that “the youth is the hope of our nation.” But is it still the case of our modern teenagers? Most people when asked about teenagers always incorporate violence with them. The main reason might be because most of them distort the true meaning of freedom and use it to defend their wrong doings. Freedom is a right only given to those who also acknowledge the rights of other people. This right cannot anymore be claimed once you start inflicting harm to other people. I have attended a seminar recently entitled “Adolescence: Is It Just About Violence” and some of the major reasons of the unruly behaviour of the teenagers were discussed.

How is It to Become a Teenager Part 2: Identity, Love and Belongingness

Who said that children are the only ones that need love? It is by this age when the need for love and belongingness double because it is one way in which teenagers cope up with all the changes that they need to undergo. Some of them receive more pressure than the others because of their parents wanting them to have academic achievements. This is the stage which Eric Erickson called as “Identity vs. Role Confusion”. One of the main problems of this stage is the gender issue because most teens experience bisexuality at this point in their lives. It is eventually resolved once they reach adulthood.

How is It to Become a Teenager Part 1: The Sandwiched Generation

You were given this life because you’re strong enough to live it. Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes things fall apart so other things can fall together, but in the end, what’s meant to be, will always find a way.

The most exciting part of being a human being is becoming a teen, because it is when most unexpected things happen. It is when you start having serious admiration for your fellow teenagers. But even if that is the case, there are things that you should consider. The reason why many teenagers tend to rebel against their parents is because of the fact that we are at the middle of childhood and adulthood stage; many teens are left confused. For instance, parents would say that teens should already be mature enough to handle their own lives because it is not all the time that they are there to support them. However, if there come thes time when teens are already definite on their decisions on what paths to take, parents would simply refute by saying that they are still too young to understand what they are planning to do. Can you just imagine the dilemma it gives the teenagers like me? It is at this stage when parents’ favourite word is “No”.

“No, you can’t do this, you can’t do that. Please! Finish college first before going to any serious relationship.”

The Joy Of Owning 30 Dogs

Owning thirty dogs is not that easy. You get to wake up early in the morning to feed them and clean their dirt. The most difficult part of it is that you need to give them equal love so that none of them will get left behind. Although some would say that it’s very difficult, the joy they give you is unparalleled. From the moment you wake up in the morning and by the time you retire for the day, it is them that you see.

Despite all the hassles they give you, you’ll just learn to love them. The companionship they can give you can never be matched by any other species that live here on Earth. No matter how many times you scold them, they will always stay loyal to you. Just like humans, they also have different kinds of behaviors. There are some who are quiet and like to be alone, there are also some who love to play most of the time, but no matter what their behavior is, they are just equally lovable. What I noticed even before that once you call one of them, the other 29 will come running towards you. They will constantly compete for your attention. Believe it or not, I have dogs who like to listen to music and watch television. What is more interesting is that I have a dog, which does not have a tail, who likes watching himself in the mirror. They seem irrational for some, but for me who witnessed how great these animals are, I can say that they are more intelligent than what others think they are.

The Proclamation of President Aquino and Vice President Binay

Today marks another hallmark in the Philippine history. Many people are saying that this may be the change that we’ve all been looking for. The reason for this claim is that many people believe that these two officials can bring back to what Philippines were before the regime of the dictator President Marcos. After a long battle of canvassing, Aquino as we knew it lead the presidential race with an enormous 5,927,990 against his opponent, while Binay lead 727,084 against his closest rival Senator Mar Roxas.

Sex Education For Preschoolers: Is It Beneficial Or Just Plain Suicide

As a nursing student and a conservative person, I must say that I am unsure of my stand about this particular issue. According to studies, the best time to teach your children about sex is when the child asks you about that topic for the first time. For many years, it has been a tradition that parents would impose restrictive measures to stop the child from asking those kinds of questions. Parents would usually say: "No", "Not now", "It's bad, don't mention it", or "You're still a kid, you don't understand what you're saying."  From what I've also observed from the past, those children that were often scolded have higher tendency of having low self-esteem or perhaps the tendency to rebel compared to those that were carefully taught. As I have said, I am yet unsure of my stand, but if you insist on asking me, I must say that I am “for” sex education for preschoolers considering these listed points below:

Point #1: It is better for children to have a “guided exposure” to the reality of this world. As an example, instead of letting the child cover his or her eyes when there are sex or kissing scenes in the movie, why not let the child see it and explain to him or her that those things are only done by adults, and that it is the reason why he or she is alive right now. The tendency of depriving the children from those kind of information will lead the children to seek answers for themselves.
Point #2: It takes off a huge load that parents need to carry. At least parents won’t be sitting down anymore with their children explaining about the “birds and the bees” or the “bees and the flowers”. Don’t you think it is much better for a professional to handle that situation?
Point #3: It is a clear indication of accepting the reality that the problem does exist. The main reason why this problem is still persisting is the fact that most parents are still in denial of the existence of the problem.
Point #4: “Prevention is better than cure.” As reinforcement to my point #3, it is better that we try to resolve the problem while it is still at its primary stage. Why? Ask yourself this question: “What is there to teach about sex education if the child is already pregnant?” It is not that I’m allowing premarital sex. What I’m trying to say is that there is really the tendency for it to happen.
Point #5: Teaching at an early stage. Many people would ask why is it that sex education should be taught at a very young age. It is because it is the age bracket when the child is susceptible to learning new information. It is also the time when the child is not yet preoccupied with the wrong idea related to sex education.
I am not saying that I am correct. We all have our own point of views. If you have your own stand about this issue, you are free to comment. God Bless You!

Facebook Addiction, Is It Getting Out Of Hand

In the recent Alexa Top 500 Global Sites that was presented, it showed that Facebook is now the #2 website on the internet basing from the frequency of visitors per month. With an enormous 250 million registered users, it has already beaten some of the biggest companies such as Yahoo, Youtube, Windows Live that dominated the internet over the past years.

Facebook is now becoming not just a hobby but an addiction. Have you ever tried waking up in the morning nothing in your mind but to check on those who commented on your photo or perhaps your status message? Have you ever tried being online all day just to try some of the good applications? Or have you ever tried falling asleep while you are still online? These three simple questions might already lead you to the realization that maybe you are already getting addicted to Facebook. Others may not take this seriously but in the medical world, there is this newly found term to describe what is now becoming a trend, and it is called “Facebook Addiction Disorder”.
“The amazing thing is that, like cellphones, nobody seems to notice the vast amount of time and energy – at work, at home, and now while on the move – people are devoting to Facebook. It has become a given,” Fenichel writes in an online post titled “Facebook Addiction Disorder- A New Challenge?”  ~Psychologist Dr. Michael Fenichel

This addiction can bring a wide array of problems in the long run. This can aggravate the problem in fighting off obesity because people, especially the young ones have no other things to do anymore other than waking up in the morning, eat, use Facebook, then sleep again. Do you remember the news about a child who died because of playing Star craft for 72 straight hours? You can say that Facebook and Star craft are two different things, but don’t you think that the harmful effect of the radiation of your computers just bring the same harm to you? This can even weaken family ties because instead of spending time with your loved ones, you choose to sit all day looking at your Facebook account like there’s no more tomorrow.

I have a question for you: Is it that Facebook is really a disease or is it a sign of human failure? We have always have options to choose from. Try asking yourself, are you becoming addicted to Facebook? Share your thoughts about it.

God Bless You!

Love At First Sight, Does It Really Exist? Part 1

To begin my article, let me share to you a personal family story about how my grandparents met and married each other: It was one Saturday of May, 1968 when my grandparents attended a party. They exchanged their greetings to each other but there was no special about that moment although there was something inside them that tells them already that they were meant for each other. After that night, they were not able to see each other for the next 6 days but on the 7th day, they met each other again. They did not waste time and went to the church to get married. I was in awe when I heard about their story and I think you too, but can we really classify their roller coaster affair to be a ‘love at first sight’? Many would argue that yes, it is indeed love at first sight because of the fact that why is it that among all the people at the party, they were the ones who were able to establish internal connections with each other. Let me answer you by saying that love should not just be based on a particular moment in time. It could be that they’ve left each other an impression, something that made them admire each other, but I don’t think there was love already during that encounter.

True love is learned.
It is not something that you get overnight. Have you ever realized why many people would say that the true color of men only shows up once they are married? But if you’re still going to argue that there is really love at first sight, then maybe there is, but it is only superficial. It is there when you are still with each other but eventually wears off once you are already far away from each other. Do you know that arranged marriage according to research is even more successful than a love-based marriage? It is because of the fact that there is generally no impression, and so they’ll not get frustrated once one of them cannot attain their expectations from each other. Don’t you think that loving is much better if it comes from hard work. The excitement of loving is like earning your first pay check from your work. Although those things are two different things but the idea is, relationship that goes through thorns and calamities last longer because you’ll think about the hardships you’ve been through to get the love you’ve always wanted.

Love is a sacrifice you need to make.
True love is loving the person many times in his or her lifetime because as we all know; relationship of a wedded couple is always bombarded with so many problems. Love can also be considered to be as a series of happenings that strengthens the relationship. Those happenings are only instruments to make you realize once more that life is indeed imperfect. As my mother used to tell me, those things (e.g. husband cheating on their wife) are just part of those ingredients that spice up one’s relationship because without them, there’s nothing more to talk about in the long run. Opposite from my grandparents’ experience, my mother’s is different because it’s solely a story of ‘love is earned’ marriage.
I hope you learned something about this article. In the second part of this 2 part series, I will try tackle another situation but still in the same category. I will also try to  tackle about the criteria about true love and the signs that you are already learning to love a person.

McDonald's Shrek Glasses Recalled

Just recently, it has been known that the Shrek-themed glasses of the giant fastfood chain are tainted with cadmium. This forced the company to recall an enormous 12 million US-made collectibles. The 16-ounce glasses, being sold for about $2 each as part of a promotional campaign for the movie "Shrek Forever After," were available in four designs depicting the characters Shrek, Princess Fiona, Puss in Boots and Donkey. Everybody is talking about the toxic effect of Cadmium, but what is Cadmium? It is a chemical element with the symbol Cd. The soft, bluish-white metal is chemically similar to the two other metals zinc and mercury. Cadmium occurs as a minor component in most zinc ores and therefore is a by-product of zinc production. Cadmium was for a long time used as pigment and for corrosion resistant plating on steel.
Can you just imagine if you are the one taking it? Ingestion of any significant amount of cadmium causes immediate poisoning and damage to the liver and the kidneys. Compounds containing cadmium are also carcinogenic. The bones become soft (osteomalacia), lose bone mineral density (osteoporosis) and become weaker. This causes the pain in the joints and the back, and also increases the risk of fractures. In extreme cases of cadmium poisoning, mere body weight causes a fracture. The kidneys lose their function to remove acids from the blood in proximal renal tubular dysfunction. The kidney damage inflicted by cadmium poisoning is irreversible. The proximal renal tubular dysfunctionhypophosphatemia), causing muscle weakness and sometimes coma. creates low phosphate levels in the blood (hypophosphatemia), causing muscle weakness and sometimes coma.

Perfectly Imperfect

Perfection itself is imperfection.
I have always said before and I will still say it once more, there is no such thing as a perfect person because it is through the imperfection of this world that we become perfect. Digging deeper to the meaning of the quotation above, it means that you don't need to achieve perfection because imperfection in itself brings beauty to what seems to be perfect in the eyes of people.

There is a kind of beauty in imperfection.

Love is not seeing the perfect person, but seeing the imperfect person perfectly.

Have you ever catch yourself thinking that if you were just a bit different and good looking, then you would be more appreciated by more people? Do you know that the thinking of most people that no one like them is just actually a product of imagination? There are things that are better left unmodified because it is the factor that makes them unique and spectacular. Look at the 'Tower of Pisa'. It is the product of architectural error, but instead of it being hated by people, it is being more appreciated now. Should we really hate imperfection? Remember these things: It is because of imperfection that we need our special someone to fill in the missing piece in us. It is by this that we get to let our crushes teach us the subjects that we don't understand. It is by this that we can offer our loved ones a ride or a dinner for a treat. And it is by this that we get to meet our destined one. Don't you just love being imperfect? Who needs to be perfect if you know that imperfection is the reason why all of us are unique.

Marriage: An Island Of No Return

Marriage is maybe the ultimate goal of most lovers because it is a way of showing their partners how they love them. Just to share you a personal story: It was twenty three years ago when my parents were married in Samar, Philippines. Although they're married young, it did not stop them from finishing their studies. My father was the one who financed my mother's schooling. While I was listening to their story, I was asking myself, "Could I have survived if I were in their situation 23 years ago?" I was pondering with the thought of it until another question popped out of my head: " 'I love you', will that very statement suffice the growing demand of being a married person?" My mother used to tell me that, yes, love is a very important component of marriage yet it is not the only ingredient to have a happy wedded life.
In marriage, love is a sacrifice you have to make.

For many, the act of letting go is the greatest love that you can ever give your partner but never for me, because for me the greatest act of love is the act of sacrifice. I have seen the greatest fight of my parents but instead of them separating, my mom told us, "no matter what happens, I will never leave this family because I don't want you my children to suffer from our mistakes." I guess it’s because of the fact that there is no such thing as a perfect relationship. You always need to understand your partner. Taking it from the experience of my mother, she had the chance to achieve fame and wealth yet she did not grab that opportunity for the welfare of her children. She always said, “iba naman talaga pag ang bata ay lumaki sa puder ng isang nag aarugang ina.” (It is so much better if the child grows with his mother around to take care of him.) Sacrifices? We get to face them in every moment of our lives. There is just one thing that I can tell you now: understand first the true meaning of love before you make any more sacrifices.

I hope you learned something from what I’ve shared to you. God Bless you!

Who Am I? (without my pen and paper)

(writing my debate piece as early as 7:30am at the mall)

I took up nursing by the encouragement of my mother that I'll earn more money if I work abroad. Although I'm already in my 3rd year, I am yet unsure whether I'm really happy with the path I'm taking. I dreamt before of becoming a doctor, but then I am more inclined to public speaking and writing articles and poems. For some, I am a good singer and for some I am a great personal adviser. There are even some people who say that I know more things than them in terms of life experiences. I somewhat agree because I always believed that it's not that because you're older you have already achieved more. It solely depends on how you manage your life. No matter what other people may say about me, I can assure you that I am just a normal 18 year old person who's trying to keep up with the modernization of this world.

I love attending formal parties and traveling as long as it is within my budget. They are the things I do to unwind after a very tiring semester of studying.

The Beauty Of True Friendship

A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.
~Walter Winchell

As many people have said, "love fades but friendship never ends." The power of friendship conquers any sorrow and troubles that come in every person's life. There is no such thing as a perfect friendship; there will come a time when friends will have misunderstandings, but those fights are only instruments to strengthen your relationship with each other.

The image of the people above are some of my true friends (there are many more yet I just can't fit them to one small picture), the ones who never left me. The ones who respected and understood my situation. The ones who loved me and I loved in return. We are not perfect, all of us have different interests and views in life, however, we blend perfectly because of the fact that we are bonded by a special force called "friendship". Aside from my family, I think my friends are the greatest blessing God has ever given me. The very people who are special to my heart and no matter what happens, I'll never forget them. They are the ones who make me feel special, the ones who always make me feel that I am something in the society.

Among the many articles about friendship, the one published by Dr. Ronald D. Bissell is the one that inspired me the most when he said that "Friendship is more than just being friends. It is a connection deep within the spiritual soul that is an unearned gift of love because true friendship is seen through the heart not through the eyes." Of the 18 years that I am living here on Earth, it is just now when I realized that friendship is indeed two people that are willing to give companionship to one another.

Thank you my friends for always being there for me. If the three magis had a star to guide them along their way, I had you to lead me when I felt that I was just a useless wandering soul.

God Bless You!

Six Major Problems That Are Bombarding Students

Many students are often bombarded with so many problems in life and they do not only cover one aspect of being a student. I surveyed 100 students in our school including some teachers, and I have enlisted the top six major common problems among students:
6. Love Life

It may be a priority for some, but it only ranked top 6 on  the list. It goes to show that either the students are getting more serious with their studies or it’s just that many are afraid of commitments. It is just fine to have boyfriends or girlfriends so long as it is not affecting your grades. I have a classmate who has someone dear to her heart yet she says that “I am only going to answer him after we graduate in college.”

5. Cellular Phones and other gadgets

The main reason to use cellular phones is not just to play the applications or surf the internet through wireless connection, but also for educational purposes. By the use of the modern technology, teachers can now connect through the use of texting or by email. Cellular phones are very important especially if you have group projects. Some schools are prohibiting students from bringing expensive phones because of the fact that many are tempted to steal. Just recently in our school, my classmate’s phone got stolen and we suspected that one of our schoolmates got it. I guess it’s just for the good that some schools are doing it.

4. Writing Materials
Have you ever told “never to go to a war without any weapon”? Many students especially during exam day tend to forget to bring their pencils or ballpoint pens.

3. Pressure From Parents
The reason why many students do not excel in school is the fact that many of them are just forced to take up the course their parents like or that they can’t cope with the pressure that their parents are giving them. Some parents are sol old-fashioned that they don’t know how to efficiently let their children show what they got.

2. Memorization
How I hate memorization. Do you know that reading a book itself can be a solution to your sleeping problems. I even have a teacher before who said that reading a book is more effective than taking sleeping pills. It is really true especially if you need to memorize a lot of terms and definitions. The only way to prevent mass memorization is by studying every night.
And the number 1 spot goes to…

1. Paper

It may be funny for some, but according to some statistical data: out of 40 students in the classroom, unless required to bring, only 1-2 students have paper with them. Every time the teacher asks the students to get a whole sheet of paper, students roam around the classroom asking a piece of paper from their classmates.
